Breed Information of Alaskan Malamute Dog

The Alaskan Malamute dog is characterized by a medium to large size. They belong in the sled dog family. They have very dense coat, allowing them to stay outside even in harsh winter conditions. The coat is typically black and white, grey, wolf grey, and even red. They have a standard lifespan of 12 to 15 years.

The Alaskan Malamute is a very old breed which resembles the appearance of wolves. This breed was named after the tribe Mahlemuts who came from Siberia to live in the modern day Alaska. The dogs provided them with a reliable form of transportation despite living in a place where climate is very challenging. They are not just used as sled dogs, but they are also used in polar bear hunting.

Alaskan Malamute Characteristics

The Alaskan Malamute has an even temper, and they love to be with humans. As a matter of fact, they often stay with a human family owner. They are very friendly, making them not suitable for guard dogs. These days, they are mostly used as companion dogs while some are still being used for mushing.

This breed learns quickly and is quite smart. Training, however, should start early. They associate well with children and they even enjoy playing with them. However, just make sure that the children are big enough to play with them safely. They can also be hostile to other dogs of the same sex.

The dogs belonging to this breed is prone to stomach torsion or bloating. If you observe your dog experiencing this problem, it is very important to refer the condition right away to an animal hospital for treating. The dog may also suffer from other conditions such as hip dysplasia.

Since the Alaskan Malamute sheds heavily, it is important to brush out their coat at least two times a week. A regular dog blows its coat two times a year. Thus, it is recommended to brush the coat more during these periods. Dry shampooing is what is needed for bathing.

These days, as previously mentioned, Alaskan Malamutes are kept as companion dogs. Therefore, they are generally kept inside the house. While they are capable of living outside, it is still very important to visit them during the daytime. They are not the types of dog that are kept inside an apartment, because they are created in a way that allows them to be extremely active. Therefore, they should not be kept in a confined space. They also need to exercise often in order to stay fit. By failing to provide enough exercise, they may end up destroying everything in its surroundings. As long as they are given the right care, they are the perfect pet dogs.
